At a recent debate on the European Union's health initiatives, Mr Padraig Flynn, Commissioner for Social Affairs, said that he would be presenting a proposal for a future cancer research programme which would start in 1995. This would be the first specific proposal to be tabled under the recently adopted framework for action in the area of public health. In 1990, 840,000 people died from cancer and the number is increasing every year in line with the European Union's ageing population. Commissioner Flynn said that mortality from cancer could increase by a further 15% in the next 15 years unless a global cancer prevention strategy was put in place.
