A Commission Memorandum on the establishment of a sixth ECSC programme of ergonomics research for the steel and coal industries notes that in the successful fifth programme in this field, carried out in the period 1985-89 (OJ No C 270 of 22.10.1985) an appropriation of ECU 15 million was made available for joint funding of projects. This sum is now fully committed. The Commission has therefore decided to undertake a sixth programme, based on knowledge already available from previous programmes and other sources, offering financial support to action-oriented studies leading to the definition of the parameters optimizing human interaction with technological systems and environments in these industries. Topics will include: Cognitive performance; human reliability; biomechanical limitations; protection from noxious environments and substances. A maximum overall Commission contribution of ECU 15 million is estimated as necessary for the five year period 1990-94.
