The Welsh First Minister, Rhodri Morgan, has rejected calls by scientists for a full-time chief scientific adviser, saying that it is too soon for such staffing structures. A group of eminent scientists recommended the creation of a scientific advisor post earlier in the year, and received cross-party support for the proposal. Mr Morgan has however responded by saying that his government already has a number of science advisers in specific fields. 'We believe it is premature to consider staffing issues of this nature', and devolved administrations are able to draw upon scientific advice given to the UK government, Mr Morgan said. The First Minister has however previously emphasised the importance of science for Wales and pledged that he would take on the portfolio personally. The Welsh Assembly Government is the devolved government for Wales. Led by the First Minister, it is responsible for issues such as health, education, economic development, culture, the environment and transport. Countries United Kingdom
