The European Commission has raised no objections to an aid scheme notified by the Italian Government concerning Provincial Law 7/91 adopted by the provincial authorities of Trento. The scheme aims to encourage environmental protection measures by awarding grants to firms for relocation and restructuring for environmental reasons, cleaning up polluted sites, investments in pollution control, recycling and reuse of waste and energy efficiency measures. Under the Law, aid is granted to companies which undertake the environmental improvements on a voluntary basis. Aid intensity for companies is limited to a maximum of 30% of the extra environmental costs. The investments must contribute significantly to the improvement of the environment of Trento. The budget for the scheme until the year 2001 is LIT 45 billion (ECU 24.1 million) annually, and its duration is indefinite.
