The European Commission, DG XII, has produced a detailed brochure entitled "Science and technology for tomorrow's Europe". It provides an overview of the aims and contents of the Fourth Framework Programme for research and development, combining concise information with practical examples. In particular, it examines the key features of the programme which are as follows: - The coordination of research efforts as a result of better cohesion and greater cooperation between Member States; - Research in the following areas: industrial technologies and advanced materials, development of clean technologies (sustainable development), medicine and health, life sciences and technologies, transport, dissemination of research results and socio-economic research; - Closer interaction between technological progress and social sciences; - The development of R&D activities in connection with other Community policies; - The exploitation and transfer of results; - Continued emphasis on training and mobility.
