European Transport Ministers endorse transport telematics
Transport telematics was a prominent issue on the agenda of the informal meeting of the Transport Ministers of the European Union which took place under the German Presidency in Ludwigsburg on 22-23 July 1994. The meeting also included the ministers from those countries expected to join the EU in 1995. The Transport Ministers discussed the advanced state of research and development in transport telmatics, its increased importance the White Paper on Growth, Competitiveness and Employment (COM(93)700), the conclusions of the recent summit in Corfu, and the subsequent communication on the information society. The White Paper on the Future Development of the Common Transport Policy was also taken into consideration. A paper from the presidency and an informal paper from the Commission provided the bases for the discussion. The Ministers emphasized the need for interoperability, the development of common framework conditions, as well as the importance of increased standardization. The need for flexibility enabling different technical solutions and systems to be provided by a variety of suppliers was also underlined. The Commission announced that a communication on the development of transport telematics will be examined by the Council of Minister in the autumn.
