The European Commission has published a Council Decision on the European Community contribution to the Nuclear Safety Account of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The amount of the contribution is ECU 20 million and represents the largest single contribution to the account which covers urgent actions, safety measures, upgrades, as well as decommissioning. The Community contribution underlines the precarious situation in the field of nuclear safety in several of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and of the former Soviet Union. The Community, through its technical assistance programmes PHARE and TACIS, devotes considerable effort in this area and this contribution represents a determination to identify the most suitable aid strategy for nuclear safety in the region. By contributing to the EBRD account, the Community recognizes the importance of a coordinated international approach to overall energy policy in the region.
