On 7 July the Commission held a meeting in Bratislava to discuss R&D cooperation with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The Commission asked for each of the countries which participated in the meeting to identify its priority areas of action. Cooperation will take the form of cooperation through the Fourth Framework Programme as well as through the PHARE programme. Specifically, Austria identified the urgent need for research in all areas of environmental protection and ecological development. The ecological survey of the Danube River Basin which was suggested by the Hungarian Delegation is singled out as a good example of a project which would have wide-ranging benefits. Other areas which are important for Austria include energy efficiency, alternative energies, agriculture and biology.
