The European Parliament amended the 1994 RTD budget with the creation of a new budget line for renewable energies which received an allocation of ECU 25 million in accordance with "Actions de Preparation, d'Accompagnement et de Support" (APAS). The funds are to cover the preparation and anticipation of the implementation of the renewable energies part of the energy element of the first action of the Fourth Framework Programme. The amount proposed reflects the increased interest of the European Parliament in this area. The research and development activities concern research proposals in the following areas: - Integration of renewable energies in the regions; - Water desalination plant powered by renewable energy sources in the Mediterranean countries; - Development of bioelectricity; - Urban planning which makes optimum use of renewable energies; - Photovoltaic electricity generation cooperation between Europe and developing countries. The most recent call for proposals resulted in 340 proposals being received and these are currently being evaluated. It is expected that 80 priority projects will be selected for funding. These will be announced at the conclusion of the evaluation process later this year.
