The work programme for the telematics applications programme under the Fourth Framework Programme for research and technological development and demonstration (1994-1998) has been published by DG XIII of the European Commission. The telematics applications programme has two main aims. One is to further promote the competitiveness of European industry and the efficiency of services of public interest and to stimulate job creation through the development of new telematics systems and services in such areas as telework and teleservices. The other, which is a new feature contained in the Treaty on European Union, is to promote research activities necessary for other common policies. The RTD will be based on the experience gained under the Third Framework Programme but will be directed in three new ways. Firstly, the emphasis will shift from data telematics to the new "multimedia telematics". Secondly, more importance will be attached to user requirements. Finally, particular attention will be placed on finding affordable solutions. Sectors open for proposals (with indicative budget (in ECU million) in parentheses) are the following: - Administrations (25); - Transport (117); - Research (26); - Education and training (34); - Urban and rural areas (25); - Healthcare (70); - Environment (15); - Language engineering (23); - Programme support actions (21); - Specific measures for SMEs (15).
