Report on land use planning controls for major hazard installations in the European Union
The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) has published a report entitled "Land use planning controls for major hazard installations in the European Union". The report was prepared by the JRC's Institute for Systems Engineering and Informatics which provides support activities initiated under the Council Directive on the major accident hazards of certain industrial activities. The report, together with annexes describing the practices of particular Member States, examines the varying land-planning controls which were applied by the European Community over the siting of new major accident hazards, the extension of existing ones and the use of land within their vicinity. The report also considers what conclusions can be drawn from the arrangements described and suggests areas for further exploration in the interests of greater harmonization.
