ESC Opinion on training, safety and the environment
On 29 May 1990 the Economic and Social Committee decided to draw up an Opinion on training, safety and protection of the environment. The Opinion was adopted unanimously at the ESC's 286th plenary session of 24 April 1991. The Committee notes that although management bears a special responsibility for environmental protection, workers better educated in this respect will put their ideas and knowledge regarding the environment to practical use; this should happen right from the training stage, with the introduction of ecological subjects into training programmes. Topics include: The importance of vocational qualifications for improving safety at work and the quality of the environment; the environment as a new component of training for all occupations (vocational skills in the interests of the environment, examinations, cost-benefit analysis); specialists in environmental protection (ecological problems facing a firm or organization, workers qualified as specialists in environmental protection, safety at work and the environment).
