The European Community, through the Human Capital and Mobility (HCM) programme, supports research networks, linking research teams across the EU in joint projects. While the results of the research projects are not expected until the networks mature, coordinators of the networks draw up "database reports" containing abstracts of progress to date, which accompany their annual reports to the Commission. These database reports have been put into a common format with the aim of making them available to the wider research community by electronic means. The first contracts under the HCM programme were issued in 1993, each one covering, on average, three years of research networking. The first batch of reports, covering the first year results of 48 HCM network projects, was finalized in December 1994 and should be made available in spring 1995. It is intended to update these reports annually and to add reports covering the remaining projects. A total of 700 projects were financed under the HCM programme.
