Environment programme for Northern Ireland under ENVIREG
Within the ENVIREG Community Initiative (aimed at the reduction of pollution in coastal areas, better management and control of hazardous and toxic waste, and the planning of land use in coastal areas to preserve the natural environment) the Commission has approved an operational programme of environmental pollution control for Northern Ireland for the period 1991 1993. ECU 16 million will be provided from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) towards the total necessary appropriation of ECU 24 million. The operational programme will aid construction of new sewage works in areas important for the region's tourism, and support shellfish industries in the Foyle estuary, the port of Larne and Carlingford Lough. In addition, studies will be made to assess the environmental risks of landfill waste disposal sites and pilot schemes will be launched to encourage waste minimization and recycling programmes.
