The proceedings of the Telematics for Education and Training Conference, held in Dusseldorf in November 1994, have been published by IOS Press under the title "Telematics for Education and Training". The aim of this conference was to provide an overview of the most advanced telematics systems for learning, in terms of both technological and pedagogical innovation, in a European and global context. It presented the results of research carried out by over 200 companies involved in 30 projects, within the Third Framework Programme, to experiment with the use of information technologies in education and training. In addition, it explored telematics for education and training under the Fourth Framework Programme and in the broader context of European Union initiatives in this area, including the SOCRATES and LEONARDO DA VINCI programmes. The proceedings of the conference cover, in particular, the following areas: - The political strategies of the Fourth Framework Programme regarding education and training supported by technology and telematics; - The political, cultural, sociological and market factors which determine the success of the new learning environment; - The development and evaluation of learning systems; - How home-learners, SMEs, international enterprises and secondary and tertiary education are involved; - The various components of learning systems, including the management of virtual space, the economical production of learning materials and the use of simulation. The annex to this document presents the findings of workshop discussions and demonstrations on these topics.
