The European Commission, DG XIII, has published a report entitled "Completion of the European Directory of Marine Environmental Data (EDMED) for all EC member countries". The report reviews the work carried out for the compilation of EDMED entries for the Member States of the European Union (prior to the 1995 enlargement and excluding Luxembourg). The work, which was carried out by the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC), was funded under the marine sciences and technologies (MAST) programme of the European Commission. The preparation of a comprehensive directory of marine data sets is seen as an essential first step to developing a European perspective to the management and utilization of marine environmental data. Such data lie dispersed across European in collections maintained by hundreds of different laboratories, university departments, institutes, data centres and private companies. Until recently very little information has been available at European level, or even on a national basis, to identify the various collections of marine data and describe their contents, where and in what form they are held and how they might be accessed. EDMED has been designed and developed for the European Commission, by the BODC, to address this problem. In addition to detailing the work carried out for the compilation of EDMED entries, the report includes information on how to prepare and submit entries to EDMED and copies of the necessary forms.
