Waste not, want not

The Terraforming LIFE project is turning fish sludge and animal manure into bio-fertiliser and biogas for a greener tomorrow.

Fish farming generates significant amounts of effluence through uneaten feed and faeces. The Terraforming LIFE project proposes turning this spoilage into spoils. The project is developing a circular value chain that uses water recycling technology to recover fish sludge from land-based fish farms, also known as recirculated aquaculture systems (RASs). This sludge is then combined with livestock manure using an innovative fermentation process before being transported via a mobile treatment unit to a bio-fertiliser plant. Once digested to produce biogas, the remaining material is a nutrient-rich fertiliser.
