The International Telecommunication Union has announced that the President of South Africa, Mr. Nelson Mandela, will be one of the keynote speakers at the opening of the TELECOM'95 conference, to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 3-11 October 1995. The opening ceremony itself will take place on a futuristic stage set designed especially for the event and will feature a number of demonstrations of the latest innovations in world communications technology with live video links to Japan and South Africa. Held this year under the theme "Connect!", the TELECOM event itself has changed considerably since the first edition in 1991. The convergence taking place in the telecommunications, information technology and entertainment industries means that there are many new exhibitors who are making their first appearance at the event, including Microsoft, Intel Corporation and Oracle. The boom in the growth of the Internet has also meant more interest from the general public than ever before, resulting in the addition of a special Internet conference to be held over the weekend of 7-8 October 1995.
