The European Commission, DG XII, has recently made available the results of the first call of proposals under its specific RTD programme in the field of industrial and materials technologies (BRITE/EURAM) (1994-1998). A total of 209 projects have been selected as a result of this call. These represent a total allocation of ECU 402 million and involve over 1,600 participants (60% from industry). A second call for proposals is due to be published at the end of 1995 for an equivalent amount. Given the coherence of the three research areas covered by the programme (production technologies, materials and technologies for product innovation, transport technologies), this call will be open to all three areas. The announcement of the launch of this second call will be published in the Official Journal of the European Communities of 17 October 1995. In addition, ECU 225 million has been set aside, for the period 1995-1998, for specific actions aimed at stimulating the technological development of SMEs. This area is covered by a continuous call for proposals which means that projects may be submitted at any time. Since the beginning of the year, 156 exploratory awards and 28 cooperative research projects have been financed for a total of ECU 17 million.
