Launched in March 1995, the European Local Authorities' Telematic Network (ELANET) initiative aims to encourage a common approach regarding infrastructure and investment in telematics applications in the European Union. The network comprises the National Associations of Local Authorities, their telematic daughter companies and a selected number of private companies working with local public administrations. ELANET aims to encourage financial support from the European Commission for its members' trans-European telematics projects, particularly in the context of the development of the Information Society. It also aims to develop relations with the EU's Committee of the Regions. The Union des Villes et Communes Belges, a member of ELANET, has recently established a network connecting the administrations in the country's cities and providing them with basic services. This network has been established in partnership with Credit Communal, a Belgian bank. ELANET will be presenting this network to officials from the Commission, and particularly from the Information Society Project Office (ISPO), at a meeting in Brussels on 19 and 20 June 1996.
