The Economic and Social Committee has adopted its opinion on the Commission proposal for a European Parliament and Council Decision adopting a programme of Community action on health monitoring (OJ No C 338 of 16.12.1995 p. 4). The proposed programme, to be adopted within the framework for action in the field of public health, would cover the period from 1 January 1997 to 31 December 2001 and should benefit from a budget of ECU 13.8 million. The programme would involve: - Establishment of Community health indicators and data; - Development of a Community-wide network for sharing health data; - Analyses and reporting. In its opinion, the ESC emphasizes the importance of establishing and maintaining health indicators and feels that it is important to involve data users at the development state. It considers, however, that it may be difficult to fit all the necessary health indicators into the same framework and would encourage separate developments in future. The ESC also feels that more funds should be provided for the collection and dissemination of data, considering the importance of this activity for the health policies of Member States.
