The European Commission has selected 109 projects for funding under the SOCRATES Community action programme in the field of education (1995-1999). The 109 projects are in the following three areas: - Open and distance learning: This action will promote the use of new technologies in conventional education and is oriented towards the development of pedagogical frameworks. A total of 41 projects were selected from 144 proposals; - Adult education: This action supports cooperation in the field of general adult education, including the production of learning materials, transnational cooperation and exchange of experience, and learning about the different EU cultures and languages. A total of 37 projects were selected from 89 proposals; - Training for language teachers: This action aims to improve, by means of partnerships, the quality of training for language teachers in Europe. A total of 31 partnership projects were selected from 44 proposals under the LINGUA strand of the SOCRATES programme. The projects chosen involve a total of almost 700 partners, and cover 18 European countries. The next deadline for applications under all these activities is 1 February 1997.
