The European Commission, DG XVI, has published a brochure entitled "Women - players in regional development". The brochure outlines the conditions experienced by women in the European Union, and provides examples of projects managed by women carried out under the Community's regional funding activities. It contains statistics detailing the position of women in the EU in relation to employment, the proportion of elected officials, proportion of company bosses, and the population in disadvantaged regions. The brochure also provides information about Community activities designed to benefit women, particularly through the Structural Funds. One initiative of the Structural Funds is NOW (new opportunities for women), which aims to create jobs and business opportunities. NOW has a budget of ECU 360 million for the period 1994-1999. The Council of EU Ministers adopted a Decision establishing the fourth action programme for equality of opportunity between women and men in December 1995. This programme has six action lines, designed to include equality of opportunity in all policies and programmes at Community, national, regional and local levels.
