Spain to receive ECU 59.28 million from Cohesion Fund
The European Commission has decided to give Spain ECU 59.28 million from the Cohesion Fund for environmental projects. The main regions to benefit are Madrid, the Basque country, Asturia, Catalonia, Castile-Leon, Aragon, Navarre and Rioja. The Cohesion Fund money will cover 80% of the total cost of the projects. The projects to be financed include: - Afforestation projects with supplementary works to combat soil erosion and desertification and to encourage the regeneration of ecosystems damaged by forest fires; - Clean-up and anti-pollution projects in the urban environment, involving the construction and repair of water collectors and the construction of sewer networks; - Urban solid-waste management projects, aimed at the creation of infrastructures and other facilities to improve the management and recycling of waste and at providing the necessary infrastructure for the selective collection of urban solid wastes and supporting the integral management of wastes; - Plant to solidify and inactivate waste, with the aim of processing industrial waste which carries a risk of leaching; - Construction of an advanced recycling centre, involving the creation of a management infrastructure for processing waste so far left untreated, such as solvents; - Urban environment: creation of park areas and civil engineering works, designed to restore degraded natural spaces and integrate river bank into the urban environment.
