The European Commission is to grant a total of ECU 50 million under the URBAN Community Initiative for regeneration programmes in Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield in England and Glasgow in Scotland. These programmes are designed to enhance the employment prospects and skills of local people as well as to raise their level of income. In total, they should create more than 2,000 jobs and contribute towards the training of a further 8,500 people. The amounts to be awarded to each city are as follows: - Liverpool: ECU 14.8 million; - Manchester: ECU 8.04 million; - Nottingham: ECU 6.79 million; - Sheffield: ECU 6.79 million; - Glasgow: ECU 13.6 million.
