Opinion of the ESC: Electromagnetic compatibility
An Opinion of the Economic and Social Committee (ESC) concerns the proposal for a Council Directive amending Council Directive 89/336/EEC of 3 May 1989 on the harmonization of the laws of the Member States relating to electromagnetic compatibility. The aim of the amendment is to extend the transitional period during which the equipment in question could continue to be subject to the national regulations. The Commission considers an extension to 31 December 1995 necessary because requisite harmonization standards will not be ready within the time limit, and also to provide for the disposal of stocks of equipment manufactured under national regulations prior to the entry into force of the Directive. The ESC's Opinion reiterates the importance of European standards in the run-up to the Single Market and underlines the need for the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) to speed its work in this area. Noting that the lack of harmonized standards may adversely effect competitivity, the Committee supports the proposal.
