Strategic study on language engineering (LE-2000)
A Community initiative, intended to be launched early in 1993, aims to support the use of modern technology as a means of overcoming linguistic obstacles to the efficient operation of businesses, administrations and other institutions. In this context, the Commission of the European Communities calls for proposals concerning a study, "LE-2000", to identify the outlook for language integrated technology over the next ten years, highlight key technologies and indicate likely time-scales for their exploitation within commercial products and services. The study will also quantify benefits to be gained from the application of language integrated technology in the principal commercial and institutional sectors where dealing in many languages is costly or inefficient. With respect to the economic and social impact of the technology, European strengths and weaknesses shall be identified, in particular in comparison with the US and Japan. Drawing on the results of other studies and inventories, LE- 2000 will provide an analysis of the future outlook and possible lines of action. Estimated resource requirements for the study are in the region of 2-3 manyears. The contract will be concluded for a period of nine months beginning no later than May 1992.Full details, including application content, selection criteria, technical specifications and general terms and conditions may be obtained from: Commission of the European Communities DG XIII Attn.
