The Michelangelo Initiative, involving 14 nuclear industry organizations from eight European countries, has been formed with the aim of supporting the safety and competitiveness of future European reactors. The Initiative is supported by the European Commission and aims, in particular within the context of the Fifth RTD Framework Programme, to encourage a strong partnership of research and industry in the nuclear energy field. The nuclear industry organizations participating in the Initiative want to ensure that nuclear technology develops in pursuit of the three objectives set by the EU: environmental protection, energy security and economic competitiveness. Part of the objective of the Initiative is to reconcile public opinion with the environmental benefits of nuclear energy.
