The European Commission has approved the 1997 technical assistance programmes for Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan under the EU's TACIS technical assistance programme for the New Independent States of the former Soviet Union and Mongolia. The programmes for 1997 are designed to build on the achievements of previous years' TACIS funding in the countries. The programme for Ukraine involves total Community funding of ECU 34.75 million. This will go to projects in three fields: reform and development of institutions; support for economic reforms and development of the private sector; and the energy and environment sectors. For Kyrgyzstan, the programme funding will amount to ECU 10.7 million. This will go to projects in the following areas: structural and institutional reforms; agriculture and the agro-food industry; and basic infrastructure.
