Children of science

In order for Europe to become a competitive scientific and research pole, it must encourage the younger generation to develop an interest in science. An attractive online platform can help children learn about the different fields in science and engage them in related topics.

The EU-funded project 'European children's future university network' (ECFUN) established an online platform that engages children in science. It developed networks and experiences among European universities and other stakeholders to provide engaging science content for children, both online and through various activities. This may well influence their career choices later on in life and support Europe's economy. The project team mapped out what was needed for the project, including requirements such as graphic design, web development, web management, web content and dissemination. It meticulously gathered 63 sets of data on 10 different scientific topics featuring relevant articles, lectures and biographies. These were then adapted and edited to engage children and web visitors, offering science-based interaction in different European languages. The stories and accomplishments of different scientists were explained so that these personalities could serve as role models for the younger generation. Towards the end of the project, a global two-day conference was organised, involving children and building networks among stakeholders to foster science interest and eventual careers. By inspiring children at an early age to discover the wonders of science and develop an appreciation for it, Europe can look to a bright future supported by a high-tech, knowledge-based economy.
