Standardising construction of eco-friendly buildings
The ‘Methodology development towards a label for environmental, social and economic buildings’ (LENSE) project was designed to create collaboration among European stakeholders leading to a European accepted assessment methodology simultaneously enabling incorporation of regional or national differences and priorities. The LENSE project set up national and transnational strategic consultations among European stakeholders resulting in a list of issues broad enough to be meaningful for all but limited enough to be put into practice. The researchers also took into account activities at the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to make sure the prototype tool was in line with standards of development. The results of the project should be of use to governments, architects, project developers and clients alike. In short, the EU now has an important tool for advancement of sustainable construction whether related to assessment of existing buildings, development of new ones or reconstruction of previously existing ones.
