A call for proposals is issued by the Commission of the European Communities for research area II.2 technologies for protecting and rehabilitation the environment, of the specific programme for research and technological development in the field of environment (1991 to 1994) After a call for expressions of interest for research area II.2 published in OJ No C 291 of 8.11.1991 a work programme has been drawn up setting out the detailed objectives and types of projects to be undertaken, and the financial arrangements to be made for them. Consortia of organizations eligible to participate are invited to submit proposals for the research tasks set out in the call and covered by the work programme. These include: - Cleaner technologies: Chemical, pulp and paper and food sector industries (process optimization, substitution of harmful or toxic substances, selection/precleaning of raw materials, online process control); - Reduction of gaseous and particulate emissions from stationary sources by improving abatement technologies; - Optimization of flow patterns for integrating nitrogen, phosphorus and BOD removal, improved physical and chemical separation techniques, research on disinfection and storage of residual water; - Safe disposal of wastes not amenable to recycling by stabilization of waste and reduction of its volume, detoxification of industrial waste including biological treatment, evaluation and development of monitoring, sampling and analysis methods for the management and control of disposal sites; - Development of rapid non-invasive methods for locating and measuring contaminants and to improve existing techniques, in-situ sensors for appraisal and assessment of human exposure to mobilized soil contaminants and practices for the rehabilitation of abandoned disposal sites and contaminated areas.
