Exhibition Embryos and Medicine in the 21st Century. What do you think?
In an interactive and intelligible way, the exhibition covers the ethical and scientific implications of this topic as well as the opinions of diverse sectors of society. Likewise, it provides the general public with information about the present state of research, the latest discoveries and the therapies that can be developed using stem cells. The aim of the exhibition is to encourage the public to take a stance in the ethical debate on the use of embryos as a source of stem cells, and before leaving the exhibition, to give an opinion. In this regard, through several interactive systems and virtual discussion forums, the exhibition collects the diverse opinions expressed by visitors, which are periodically shown on the exhibition web page (http://www.pcb.ub.es/expoembrions/eng(opens in new window)). In this way, the project has become a unique and innovative tool through which to establish a true and informed dialogue with the general public.To date the exhibition has received 1000 visitors, of who 100 have expressed their opinion on this topic and an 83% have supported the use of embryonic stem cells for research purposes. The event has been commissioned by Rosina Malagrida, Head of Communications of the Parc Científic de Barcelona and has received scientific assessment from Maria Casado, Director of the Observatory of Bioethics and Law, and from Josep Egozcue, full professor of Cellular Biology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Autonomous University of Barcelona) and member of the Observatory. Located in the hall of the Main Building of the UB, the exhibition is free and is open from 16 January until 2 March 2003, Tuesday to Saturday from 10 until 20 h, and Sunday and public holidays from 10 until 14 h. It is planned that it will be held in other cities. The exhibition is supported by the UB and the Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología (Ministry of Science and Technology), in the special actions included in the National Program for Diffusion of Science and Technology of the National Plan for Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation 2000-2003.
