8th European Biotechnology Crossroads

The 8th European Biotechnology Crossroads will take place from 27th to 29th October 2004 in Marseille. Following its earlier successes in Lille 2002 and Nantes in 2003, key players in European biotech and life sciences will meet in Marseille where the focus will be on the theme "Biotechnology: from idea to markets".,

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Marseille-Provence (CCIMP) is organizing the event, which will take place in the outstanding facilities of the Parc Chanot exhibition centre in Marseille. It will also mark the official launch of BioMediterranée cluster, composed of biotechnology firms located in the area. The European Biotechnology Crossroads is made up of three major events designed to offer complementary facilities:,- A high-level international scientific and business conference.,- A trade show of major European biotech professionals, and the second biggest annual biotech trade show in Europe.,- A business convention of investors, European businesses, start-ups and legal and other experts. "The Crossroads Fringe Festival" is new for 2004, and open to the general public. It is designed to:,- Heighten awareness of the contribution biotechnology can offer the world,- Answer legitimate concerns about biotechnology,- Encourage dialogue and meetings between the general public and biotech professionals Conferences will target specific themes and stimulate public debate on the social implications of biotechnology and its potential to improve our daily lives. The Eighth Crossroads covers the following sub-sectors of biotechnology:,- Human and animal health,- Agrifood,- Environment,- Cosmetology,- Biosecurity The conference brings together speakers of more than 23 different nationalities, all of whom are international industry and scientific experts. This year's conference theme, "Biotechnology: from idea to markets" covers five sectors:,- Business and economy,- Scientific breakthroughs,- Tomorrow's technology,- Biotech careers,- In support of the Mediterranean region The trade show gives visitors an opportunity to meet in person some of the most important European contributors to biotechnology and the industry. The business convention is a professional space designed to facilitate meetings, exchanges and partnerships between participants in the biotech field. It brings together investors, European businesses, start-ups and legal and other experts. As well as bringing together all these initiatives, the 8th European Biotechnology Crossroads also hosts a number of satellite events starting on October 26th and targeting a variety of audiences:,- "The Crossroads Fringe Festival" will have meetings and events for the general public to help them understand and interact with biotechnology,,- Inserm's Showcase day, organized by Inserm-Transfert,- The assembly of the Centre for Human Biological Resources,- A meeting of European Bio-poles,- "Discovery Day" is about the potential Provençal biotechnology companies have,- The Mediterranean forum will study the needs of the Mediterranean basin in terms of health, agronomy and the environment,,- France Biotech will hold a session on the medicines of tomorrow,- The International Festival of Life Science and Biotechnology Images organized by France Biotech. "The potential in biotechnology is still an unknown quantity for most people," says Claude Cardella, president of the CCIMP. "In the fields of health, environment, industry or security, it has the potential to revolutionize our daily lives. The Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA) region has always been proactive in this area and today hosts some of the leading players from biopharmacy, ultramodern research centres, and the most prestigious scientific establishments. Initiated in 1997 by the French Ministry of Research, it is organized in a different French city each year.
