Life Sciences: New Centre of Excellence in Hamburg

A new centre of excellence has been established in Hamburg, with support from the European Social Funds. The Centre, called "Qualifications Centre Life Sciences Hamburg" is a public-private partnership aimed at improving the competitiveness of Life Sciences companies (i.e. companies working in the fields of medicine technology, biotechnology and pharma) in Hamburg and its surrounding region.,

The Centre, which combined EU funding with funding by the Free, and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and support from life science companies, is managed by Professor Walter Leal who chairs a team of experts providing training, tailor-made for companies in the Hamburg region. Aims of the Qualification Centre LIFE Sciences Hamburg:,The main idea behind the Qualification Centre LIFE Sciences Hamburg is to strengthen Hamburg as a location, to make existing positions secure and create new jobs in the field of Life Sciences by means of professional training and qualification. The Centre sets itself the aim to offer a sound qualification programme for Life Sciences companies in Hamburg (particularly for small and medium-sized companies as defined by the European Union on May 6th, 2003), in order to promote the present growth rate, to contribute to the preservation of existing jobs and to support the creation of new jobs. This is implemented by taking scientific and practice-related qualification measures in which employees participate. In order to clarify this projects' relevance in terms of the labour market, it should be pointed out that improving the qualifications of the workforce of Hamburg's Life Sciences companies will have an immediate impact on staff productivity as well as on company competitiveness. We propose to save existing jobs by demonstrating the principle of the logical chain: better qualified > more competitive > more efficient > more profitable This project also provides for the creation of new jobs. Because, the more efficient and, hence, the more profitable a company is (especially small and medium-sized ones), the greater the number of new positions it can offer. This creation of new work places is taken into account in the framework of this project. The funds made available by the European Social Fund (ESF) are meant to contribute to the creation of a highly labour market-orientated infrastructure unique in North Germany.
