VIKEF: AN ADVANCED SOFTWARE FRAMEWORK TO OPEN UP YOUR CONTENT FOR THE SEMANTIC WEB

VIKEF is developing an advanced software framework to enable the integrated development of semantic-based Information, Content, and Knowledge (ICK) management systems.

The VIKEF Project (Virtual Information and Knowledge Environment Framework), which started the 1st of April 2004, is an Integrated Project under the Sixth Framework Programme, co-funded by the European Commission. VIKEF bridges the gap between the partly implicit knowledge and information conveyed in scientific and business content resources (e.g. text, speech, images) and the explicit representation of knowledge required for a targeted and effective access, dissemination, sharing, use, and annotation of ICK resources by scientific and business communities and their information- and knowledge-based work processes. R&D within VIKEF builds on and significantly extends the current Semantic Web efforts, by addressing crucial operationalisation and application challenges in building up real-world, semantically enriched, virtual information and knowledge environments.,The overall VIKEF project objectives are addressing challenging R&D goals in the following five areas: ,1) the acquisition and harmonization of scientific and business ICK resources and resource collections in various formats aiming at a high degree of automation, ,2) the organization and semantic annotation of the acquired linguistic resources by semi-automatic opening up methods combined with the use and evolution of domain ontologies, ,3) the semi-automatic opening up of image, video and multimedia ICK resources and their semantic annotation supported by ontologies and context knowledge, ,4) formats and approaches for semantic representation, interoperability, and integration, and ,5) the reuse of semantic annotation for innovative, value adding community services empowering effective and personalized information access as well as collaboration in the targeted virtual information and knowledge environments for knowledge value chain (KVC) applications. The VIKEF application solution will maximise automation and achieve semantic interoperability, being of great relevance for breakthrough in new applicable knowledge, namely in scientific congress, trade fairs and e-learning industries. VIKEF helps the European industry and research community in semantic web technologies by supporting knowledge value chain applications of scientific and business communities; opening up scientific and business contents for smart and collaborative access; and creating added value for processes in the business domain and in processes of the scientific domain. VIKEF also contributes to take maximum advantage of the opportunities that the Information Society is creating by developing a reliable and value added support for fostering efficiency of research activities and outputs transfer to a wider industrial, economic, social and political audience; lowering barriers to access Knowledge and facilitate Integration within the Information Society; and creating ambient intelligence for an inclusive knowledge-based society for all.The VIKEF Project brings together a consortium of leading professionals, high researchers, users and software developers in the provision of semantic-based information, content and knowledge management systems and services: - INMARK Estudios y Estrategias, Spain.,- Fraunhofer IPSI, Germany.,- Xerox The Document Company SAS, France.,- Instituto Trentino di Cultura, Italy.,- Telefonica Investigacion y Desarrollo, Spain.,- Iniversita degli Studi di Bari, Italy.,- University of Trento, Italy.,- University of Sheffield, United Kingdom.,- The National Microelectronics Applications Centre Ltd., Ireland.,- finebrain.com.AG.
