EMBO Science Writing Prize 2005 - Call for Entries

The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Science & Society Programme announces its 4th annual Science Writing Prize.

Entries are welcomed from European life scientists under 40 years of ,age. The EMBO Science Writing Prize is awarded annually for an ,outstanding piece of science writing that effectively and innovatively ,communicates a life sciences topic to a non-scientist audience. The ,theme for the 2005 competition is "Genes and Behaviour" and all ,entries must cover a topic related to this theme. The judges are particularly on the lookout for original and inventive ,approaches to communicating science to the public. The science itself ,may be a scientist's own research, a burning topic in the public eye at ,present, or simply a piece of fascinating pure research. Most ,importantly, it should be written with a general non-scientist readership in mind. The winner will receive an award of Euro 1500, one year's free ,subscription to EMBO reports and an invitation to the EMBO Media ,Workshop for scientists (Heidelberg, Germany, 18 June 2005) to talk about his/her motivation for writing the article and communicating the topic to the public. Applicants should send an article of up to 2000 words by e-mail to ,scisoc@embo.org. The deadline for entries is April 15, 2005.The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) was established in 1964 with the aim to promote biosciences in Europe. Subsidiary to that general aim were concepts such as the development of a strong trans-national approach to molecular biology, the identification of measures that can assist in the training of scientists in this area and the emphasis on scientific criteria for all of its activities.
