Recycling liquid crystal display screens

GAIKER Technological Centre is taking part in a European project under the auspices of the VI Framework Programme involving the reuse and recycling of liquid crystal display screens (ReLCD) employed in the manufacture of devices such as laptops, electronic agendas, calculators, mobile telephones, electronic video-games, audio equipment, televisions and computer screens.

One of the main objectives of this project is to study methodology in order to check the operation of obsolete LCDs, as well as technologies for their reuse. Moreover, the objective is to develop a method for the detection of dangerous substances and design an eco-efficient technology aimed at the taking apart and recycling of liquid crystal display screens not in use. The project also is planning to design and launch a pilot plant for recycling LCDs and the incorporation of improvements in the design and production of liquid crystal display screens that are more respectful of the environment by means of ecodesign technologies. It is predicted that for next year 2005 -, the dumping of waste from LCDs throughout the world will reach 40,000 tonnes of liquid crystal display screens, being part of the 2 million tonnes of the electrical-electronic waste products which will be treated, having reached their end life.
