Dynamic conference calendar for corporate intranets

FIZ Karlsruhes conference information service CONFnet offers concise previews of international conferences in science and technology.

CONFnet (http://www.fiz-informationsdienste.de) incorporated into intranets of companies or academic institutions, provides central access to comprehensive information on worldwide conferences and at the same time offers the possibility to register for the conference and book hotels. The information contained in the database was either provided directly by the conference organizers all over the world, or has been compiled by the CONFnet editors from journals, calendars or innumerable internet pages. To ensure a maximum completeness and up-to-dateness, records in CONFnet are not only thoroughly edited when they are newly added to the database but also revised and reloaded whenever necessary. The dynamic conference calendar is available in different versions, specifically designed for corporate intranets : the complete database hosted on FIZ Karlsruhes server (CONFnet); a subject-related excerpt from the database (CIS), or raw data to be used by customers for various purposes. CONFnet is updated weekly. Updates for the excerpts are available monthly. There are approx. 7,000 conference previews per year for the subjects covered in the database. When the conference is over, the entry is removed from the file. ,Information can be found using free key words, or searching by country, date, conference title, subject, etc. In December 2004, for example, the key word "Semantic Web" yielded seven CONFnet entries with information on scientific conferences dealing with this topic, to be held in 2005: two in Italy, and one each in Austria, Portugal, England and Scotland. A search on the topic "Online Information" yields information on six conferences; two in the USA, two in Germany and one each in England and Switzerland. Within seconds, titles and venues of the conferences have been found and are shown in the results list, which is displayed after the keyword has been entered. One more click leads to detailed information (exact time schedule, registration modalities, deadlines for submitting papers, etc. ) contained in a concise, standardized table with links to the conference homepage, often also to the e-mail address of the conference organizers. A demo file with older conference data is available at,http://www.fiz-informationsdienste.de/de/DB/conf/index.html The retrieved information is billed according to the chosen payment model, either based on an annual flat rate, or as pay-per-view. Searches up to the results list are free. Viewing one ore more documents is chargeable (e.g. 1.50 Euro, pay-per-view).
