SYMPOSIUM: the Socio-Economic Impacts of Management Measures of the new Common Fisheries Policy

Calling all fisheries stakeholders! We would like to invite you to a timely symposium to hear about the latest developments in policy and research related to how management measures in the new Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) will affect the industry and wider stakeholder community.

Format

The symposium will adopt a participatory approach. Policy experts and fisheries researchers will provide scene-setting presentations on hot topics. This will be followed by a combination of open discussions, expert panels, facilitated debates, and breakout sessions to ensure all participants get an opportunity to engage and contribute.

Hot Topics to be covered

• Assessment of the new CFP and the social and economic impact of new management measures
• Regionalisation of fisheries management
• Impacts of the Landing Obligation

Expected Results

It is hoped that the event will ensure lively engagement and discussion between all stakeholders. All discussions will be captured and an event report will be produced and widely distributed to relevant stakeholders, including EC policy and decision makers.

Target Audience

This event is relevant to decision and policy makers, fisheries managers, fisheries industry representatives, researchers, environmental NGOs, and other stakeholders concerned with the sustainable development of the sector.

Experts who would like to contribute to the programme should contact us immediately as a small number of presenting slots are still open.

Registration

Registration is free but compulsory. The venue has a limited capacity so register early to avoid disappointment.

The deadline for registration is 30 January 2015.

Travel Grants Available

Please note there is a limited amount of funding available for relevant stakeholders to participate in the symposium. Funding will be awarded on a first-come first-served basis so please contact us immediately if you would like to apply for a grant.

Funding will cover economy travel, maximum two night’s accommodation (note: maximum rate ceiling applies) and subsistence based on real costs. Terms and conditions apply.

About the Organisers

This symposium is organised by the EU-funded FP7 project SOCIOEC (Socio-economic effects of management measures of the future Common Fisheries Policy).

The main SOCIOEC research themes are as follows:
• Theme 1: Development of a set of objectives for fisheries management which address ecological, economic and social sustainability targets.
• Theme 2: Examination of incentives in past, present and future management measures.
• Theme 3: Examination of the approach for governance of management measures as per the new CFP.
• Theme 4: Analysis of the impacts of the management measures.
