The European Commission will hold the "Urban Mobility Days" conference from 29 September to 2 October, bringing together the CIVITAS and Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (ELTIS) initiatives for the first time. This is an annual event where these mobility planning and urban innovation communities come together, this year around the theme of "Zero Emissions Mobility for All".

The three new CIVITAS projects (SENATOR, LEAD and ULaaDs) will be presented at these sessions. The SENATOR project will be presented on Wednesday 30 September at this event, which aims to become a Commission flagship conference bringing together all urban mobility communities and stakeholders. Santiago Muñoz, coordinator of the project from Correos, will explain how SENATOR will address the growing demand economy in future urban logistics and create value for both public and private stakeholders.

The purpose of the Urban Mobility Days is to share innovative and non-polluting loading solutions that offer more sustainable logistics operations for cities. Thus, the event will reflect key aspects related to planning and innovation in urban mobility in times of crisis and will take stock of the lessons learned so far during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the conference will also go beyond transport, connecting zero-emission mobility initiatives with the EU's wider efforts to tackle climate change and make Europe a zero-carbon continent by 2050.

At the digital conference, sustainable urban mobility success stories from CIVITAS Living Labs projects and other examples of pioneering excellence will be analysed. These will equip attendees with inspiration, tools and know-how to further advance clean and sustainable transport in line with the European Green Agreement.

More about the SENATOR project:
SENATOR is an H2020 project that aims to create a new urban logistic model focused on the four urban layers: end-receiver, transport, logistics and infrastructure. For this purpose, the project will develop a smart network operator supported on an ICT Platform for integrated logistics operation. This allows the optimisation of freight delivery services in urban areas, leading to decrease the number and distance of delivery routes by real-time information, predictions & planning optimisation based on Artificial Intelligence algorithms. Moreover, it connects freight delivery services & collection points and it integrates all freight delivery requirements into urban planification.

The project, coordinated by Correos, has been funded with 4 million euros by the European Union's H2020 programme. The initiative was launched virtually from 22 to 24 September and will run for four years.

Correos will work with an international consortium that includes companies and institutions from five European countries: Spain (University of Deusto, Zaragoza City Council, Zabala Innovation Consulting, DotGIS), Ireland (Dublin City Council, University College Dublin), Germany (Software AG), United Kingdom (MDS Transmodal LTD.) and Italy (RINA-C Consulting).

The European Union is facing the need for sustainable urban development due to the expected demographic evolution in cities. In addition, the shift in consumer trends towards shared and connected services, e-commerce and better environmental conditions in cities require new approaches to improve this part of the supply chain.
