A two-day conference on "Telematics and information and communications technologies in training and open learning" will be held in Bradford, England, on 22-23 September 1994. It is supported by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Telecommunications, Information Market, and Exploitation of Research (DG XIII).

During the conference, a member of the Central Support Team for the Community's IMPACT programme will present a paper on information as a strategic resource. Other topics to be discussed include:

- The role of information and communications technologies (ICTs) in life-long learning;
- How new technologies will revolutionize training strategies;
- ICTs and telematics in training: an introduction to new technologies;
- Distance training with interactive media;
- EC funding for ICTs in training;
- Multimedia applications.

Workshops will take place on the following:

- Teaching and training through interactive cable TV;
- Multimedia as a vehicle for intercultural training;
- First-class conference system software;
- New interactive learning programmes;
- Satellites in industrial training;
- Development of custom-made multimedia language training;
- Assessing ECHO-EC databases;
- Management training for SMEs through computer links;
- Telecentres, telecottages and teleworking from home;
- Teaching quality control through multimedia distance learning;
- ICTs in business simulation;
- Telematics in the employment of disabled people.
