A European conference on "Research and technological development in the rural areas of the European Union", emphasizing the role of RTD to promote socio-economic cohesion in the less-favoured regions of the EU, will take place in Monschau, Germany, from 30 September to 1 October 1996.

It is organized by the ZENIT Innovation Relay Centre and AGIT Aachen, under the auspices of the Minister for European Affairs of the Federal State of North Rhine-Westfalia and with support from DG XII of the European Commission.

The conference will focus on the exchange of national and local experiences in the context of RTD and innovation-related support for rural areas, addressing in particular the possible synergies between RTD policy and regional policy at EU programme level.

The conference will bring together local entrepreneurs, regional policy makers and EU representatives to discuss the prospects for an enhanced integration of RTD-related activities in structural aid schemes for the rural areas.
