EU-Canada information seminars on partnerships for R&D
Seminars will take place as follows:
- Winnipeg: 21 April 1998;
- Saskatoon: 23 April 1998;
- Edmonton: 28 April 1998;
- Vancouver: 30 April 1998.
The overall objective of the seminars is to increase the participation rate of Western Canadian organizations in transatlantic collaboration on research and development (R&D) projects within the Fifth RTD Framework Programme, under the umbrella of the EU-Canada Agreement on Cooperation in Science and Technology of June 1995. Such collaboration at the R&D level may lead on to increased business interaction and technology transfer between Canadian and European partners.
The specific aim of the seminars is to raise Canadian organizations' understanding of the operational modalities of partnering European consortia participating in projects of the Fifth Framework R&D Programme.
Since the EU-Canada Agreement was signed in June 1995, some 50 EU consortia now have Canadian partners undertaking joint R&D activities. However, only seven of the Canadian partners are from Western Canada (four companies, one university and two provincial institutes). These Canadian organizations are finding that participation in an EU R&D consortia can reduce the cost, time and risk to achieve their R&D and business goals.
The seminars will involve presentations from representatives of the European Commission, in order to provide an overview of the EU's R&D programmes in each of the sectors covered by the seminars.
In addition, detailed information will be given on how to identify potential EU partners and how to undertake matchmaking and technical cooperation processes. Canadian speakers will provide information on government assistance available in support of transatlantic R&D collaboration.
Case studies demonstrating the benefits gained from transatlantic collaboration will also be presented. The sectors judged of priority interest in each of the four cities are:
- Agriculture;
- Information Technology;
- Biotechnology;
- Telematics;
- Health/Biomedicine;
- Non-nuclear Energy;
- Environment and remote sensing;
- Marine technology.
