The first international conference on Non-destructive Evaluation (NDE) in relation to structural integrity for nuclear and pressurized components will be held on 20 to 22 October 1998, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The conference is organized by the Institute for Advanced Materials, part of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre.

The conference is the first in a new series devoted to the use of NDE in this context. The conference aims to cover all aspects of the subject, including the links between structural integrity requirements and NDE performance. The overall objective of the conference is to provide an up-to-date assessment of the state of development of the subject and to permit technical interchange between experts on an international basis.

Papers are invited on all aspects of the use of NDE for underwriting the structural integrity of nuclear and pressurized plant, including, in particular, the following areas:

- The relationship between structural integrity requirements and NDE performance;
- Development of risk-based assessment of structural integrity and its impact on NDE;
- Development and application of systems for qualification or performance demonstration of NDE;
- Research and development of advanced NDE methods;
- Development of improved NDE systems for field applications;
- Development, validation and application of mathematical models of NDE;
- The use of NDE to measure materials properties;
- Investigation and quantification of NDE reliability;
- Improvements in existing NDE methods;
- Development of manipulators for remote and automated NDE;
- Personnel training and qualification requirements;
- Investigation of human factors in NDE reliability;
- Assessment of the cost-effectiveness of NDE;
- The role of NDE in plant life management.
