Shaping the Workspace; essential tools for the future. Venezia 3-4 July

"People driven by technology, or technology driven by people?",International conference taking place in Venice on July 3&4, 2003.

3 July 2003 - 4 July 2003
Italy
Introduction,In the increasingly challenging economic climate organisations are more concerned than ever to reduce costs and increase efficiency. Economic pressures of this kind have in the past led to deteriorating working conditions for many workers. However research and best practice experience suggest that the workplace, both virtual and physical, acts as an enabling tool for business.
In the context of today's knowledge economy the needs of the human individual must be placed at the centre of any future vision of the design and management of the workplace.
The rationale for placing this vision within a framework of thinking holistically about business is the belief that human beings are increasingly important assets to businesses in the knowledge economy and that their productivity will be enhanced if treated as humans rather than capital assets.
While concern for the psychological, social and physical welfare of human beings in the workplace should be valued as an end in itself, increased knowledge and understanding of the business benefits of accommodating these issues acts as a powerful lever encouraging ,organisations to take action.
Conference Focus,The two-day conference "Shaping the Workplace; Essential Tools for the Future" will explore how these issues can be addressed from the perspectives of users, policymakers, implementers as well as suppliers and managers of the workplace.
This conference is being organised by the e-Locus Cluster (http://e-locus.fundaciontekniker.com(opens in new window)) on behalf of the European Commission's Information Society Directorate, New Working Environments Unit.
The conference will act as a catalyst bringing together existing communities of interest working to improve understanding of the user needs in the workplace and provide a springboard for establishing a wider understanding of our shared vision across Europe.
Expected Outputs,The e-Locus project seeks to strike a balance between drawing new ideas, research and thinking together into a shared vision and acting to disseminate these ideas to the widest possible audience. The conference "Shaping the Workplace; a tool for winning" will play an important role in creating a shared vision which can then be disseminated in terms of:
- recommendations and guideline to employers ,- a clear and concise statement identifying existing best practice and future challenges to the research community
Participants at the conference will be invited to contribute both to the further development of the vision and its dissemination.
Key priorities will be to identify the most effective mechanisms for changing established attitudes and practices in European organisations and ensuring that the conference outcome is available into as many European languages as possible.
