Invitation to Canadian Luncheon Address June 23: "The Role of Universities in Innovation and Technology Development"
Luncheon Address by Dr. Martha Piper, President of the University of British Columbia, Canada, on Monday June 23, 2003, at 12:30 (informal luncheon) with the presentation at 13:15 at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), Place du Congres 1, 1000 Brussels.
You are invited to hear Dr. Piper speak about Canada's Innovation Strategy, the Canadian government's impressive investments in research excellence, and the new inititive designed to further strengthen Canada's innovative economy. She will discuss the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, the Canada Research Chairs, the Networks of Centres of Excellence, and the role of universities in Canada's success as a knowledge-based economy.
Since 1997, Martha Piper has served as President and Vice-Chancellor of UBC, one of Canadas largest and most prestigious research universities. Mrs. Piper holds a Ph.D. (1979) in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from McGill University. She is also a member of the National Advisory Board on Science and Technology, which provides advice to the Prime Minister on national science and technology goals and policies. Currently, more than 100 Canadian companies employing 2500 people are direct UBC spin-offs.
