A conference on telematics projects in the field of environment and transport will be held in Szentendre, Hungary, on 4 and 5 June 1998. The conference is organized by the International Society for Environmental Protection (ISEP), Austria and the Regional Environmental Centre (REC), Hungary. It will be funded by the EU's Telematics Applications programme, and will support the objectives and implementation of the EU-CEEC Information Society Forum.

In line with the extension of opportunities for the participation of Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs) in EU RTD activities, foreseen under the forthcoming Fifth RTD Framework Programme, the conference will serve as an opportunity to determine their needs in the field of telematics-related technologies. The results of Telematics Applications projects in the environment and transport sectors will be presented during the conference. Existing telematics initiatives and success stories will also be presented, while the conference will aim to facilitate participation of CEEC entities in the planned Information Society Technologies programme within the Fifth Framework Programme.

The specific topics to be covered at the conference include:

- EU environmental policies and environmental priorities related to Agenda 2000;
- CEEC requirements in the environmental sector;
- An overview of the status of environment telematics in CEECs;
- Air quality management;
- Water quality and resource management;
- Constraints and problems in the transferability of telematics applications and their implementation;
- Digital networks: Administrative and public access to environmental information;
- Tools for environmental assessment and planning;
- European environmental information systems;
- Telematics support for sustainable transport systems;
- EU funding modalities;
- Priorities for CEEC environment telematics initiatives under the Fifth RTD Framework Programme.

Attendance at the conference is limited due to space constraints. However, full conference proceedings will be published after the event, both on paper and on the World Wide Web.
