Portugal
The sixth international conference on paleoceanography will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 23 to 28 August 1998, during EXPO'98. The theme of this year's conference will be "Reconstructing ocean history - A window into the future". The event will be sponsored by the EU's Marine, Science and Technology programme (MAST) and the Portuguese Institute of Geology and Minerals.

The aim of the conference is to discuss the latest developments in paleoceanography and paleoclimatology including:

- Polar-tropical and inter-hemisphere linkages;
- Does the ocean cause, or respond to, abrupt climate changes?;
- Biotic responses to major paleoceanographic changes;
- Past warm climates;
- Innovations in monitoring history;
- Changing late quaternary thermohaline circulation: How much and what were the effects?;
- Details of tertiary global cooling; Is atmospheric CO2 still the major cause?;
- Ocean-terrestrial linkages.
