A one-day symposium "Into the Optical Communications Age" will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 29 May 1998. The symposium will be hosted by the European Commission, DGXIII, under the ACTS programme, and with the support of its HORIZON project.

The aim of the event is to provide a high-level view of trends in optical communication networks and photonic technologies, and to outline options for the future.

The symposium will be opened by Robert Verrue, Director-General of the European Commission's DG XIII. This will be followed by presentations of Roadmaps for optical communications from the US, Japan and Europe. The afternoon session will feature presentations from representatives of major European telecommunications companies, followed by a discussion of the issues raised in the roadmap presentations.
